Climate and environment
We want to develop products and services that impact society in a positive way, while also helping to preserve natural resources for future generations.
We will take our social responsibility and work purposefully to help reduce and stop climate change. To achieve this, we must include sustainability in all our processes and plans. We are committed to climate and the environment and organize annual environmental days at the head office.
The construction industry in Norway accounts for approximately 15% of total CO2 emissions. Therefore, we have a special focus on the UN's Sustainable Development Goal No. 13, which is to combat climate change. Our goal is at least a 50% reduction in our own emissions by 2030, and full climate neutrality by 2050.
The sustainable housing construction of the future
The Master Group's efforts to achieve zero emissions targets are about several things. Among other things, we are working to find energy-friendly, climate-friendly and circular solutions for the construction of homes and holiday homes. In addition, we are working with suppliers, products and logistics operations.
Requirements for suppliers
We require environmental certificates and environmental product declarations (EPDs) from our suppliers and use our position to influence supplier behavior. This enables the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions from various products in construction.
We also set requirements for suppliers of transport services regarding the type of material used, so that CO2 per km is as low as possible. Through better management of the logistics operation, we seek to achieve a higher filling rate for the vehicles that drive in cooperation with our suppliers, we work to eliminate unnecessary packaging and put in place controls, routines and an environmental management system. Finally, alternatives to road transport, including train and boat, are considered when possible.
Greenhouse gas calculations for homes
The Master Group performs greenhouse gas calculations on homes. CO2 emissions are calculated throughout the building's lifetime, based on environmental data from product suppliers. The calculations are used to find more environmentally friendly materials, energy sources and construction methods.
Certifications and collaborations
The head office of Mestergruppen in Oslo became Eco-Lighthouse certified in 2021 and our own stores, factories and our central warehouse at Kløfta are Eco-Lighthouses. Mestergruppen's building materials warehouse is PEFC certified. We assist our members and retailers in becoming Eco-Lighthouses and with PEFC certification.
Mestergruppen has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2022. Mestergruppen actively supports other initiatives for sustainable solutions in the industry.
In 2023, we became a member of Handelens Miljøfond, which works to reduce plastic consumption. In the same year, we entered into an agreement with Tørn, a marketplace for surplus goods.
The Mestergruppen collaborates with Bellona on sustainable forestry, and we have signed the Greenwashing Poster, which is supported by Skift, the ZERO Environmental Foundation, WWF World Wildlife Fund and Framtiden i våre hender.
The master group will report in accordance with new regulatory EU requirements and CSRD in 2026 for 2025, but has already started work on conducting a double materiality analysis.
Other initiatives
Saltdalshytta is also an active participant in the Commonground project, which is looking at opportunities to preserve nature during cabin construction. We are working to test possible revegetation on existing fields in Oppdal and to plan for more gentle construction/placement of the cabins. The project runs until 2025.
Ferd is our majority owner and we are included in their sustainability report. Read more at Ferd.no here
