Mestergruppen’s history began in Norway in the 1970s, when a group of builders joined forces to strengthen their competitiveness through joint purchasing, collaboration and knowledge sharing. What began as a partnership between local entrepreneurs and industry professionals has grown over time into one of Scandinavia’s largest groups within building materials retail, surface products, plumbing, homebuilding and property development.

Over several decades, Mestergruppen has grown by bringing together strong chains, member companies and professional environments, united by local roots and entrepreneurship. In Norway, Mesterhus was established in 1970, followed by the formation of Mestergruppen in 1995 as a group and joint purchasing organisation for member companies across the country.

In Sweden, Mestergruppen was established through the acquisition of XL-BYGG in 2019. Since then, the group has continued to grow by bringing together XL-BYGG, BOLIST, Happy Homes, Colorama and Mal Proff, developing one of Sweden’s largest networks within building materials and surface products retail.

Today, Mestergruppen is a Nordic group with operations in both Norway and Sweden, built on strong local member companies, high professional expertise and a clear belief in collaboration as a driver of development and growth.

In 2025, Mestergruppen had annual revenue of more than NOK 19 billion. Across Norway and Sweden, we have around 1,400 employees working every day to develop the best solutions for our members, dealers and customers. Through more than 1,500 member companies and around 20 chains and concepts, Mestergruppen is today one of Scandinavia’s largest groups within building materials retail, surface products, plumbing, homebuilding and property development.

Mestergruppen is owned by Ferd, one of Norway’s largest family-owned investment companies, with a long-term ambition to develop strong businesses and create sustainable growth over time.
